The Big Blue Success Story

The Big Blue Success Story

IBM London, London, United Kingdom

IBM is, perhaps, the best-known computer company in the world. It began as the Computing, Tabulating & Recording Company founded by Herman Hollerith in the late 1800s. Their first large contract was to provide tabulating equipment for the tabulation and analysis of the 1890 US census.

The company grew quickly and, in the early 1920s the name was changed to IBM as the abbreviation of International Business Machines. IBM was the world leader in providing computer systems for both business and scientific applications. In 1949 Thomas Watson created IBM World Trade Corporation, a subsidiary of IBM focused on foreign operations.

In 1963 IBM employees and computers helped NASA track the orbital flights of the Mercury astronauts. A year later, it moved its corporate headquarters from New York City to Armonk. The latter half of the 1960s saw IBM continue its support of multiple space explorations.

When, in 1964, they revolutionized the industry by bringing out the first comprehensive family of computers (the System/360) it caused many of their competitors to either merge or go bankrupt, leaving IBM in an even more dominant position. Together the 360 and 370 made the IBM mainframe the dominant mainframe computer and the dominant computing platform in the industry throughout this period and into the early 1980s.

In the 1990s new problems came up that were caused by quick technological changes, evolving of PC industry and fierce competition. These forced IBM to reorganize operations and develop new strategy. By now they are the second computer manufacturing company but first in financial services around the world. IBM still remains a major force in the industry, operating in about 180 different countries all over the world.

Strong Positions in London as One of the Biggest Financial Centers

IBM are also present in the London area as they serve multiple large financial banks, consultancy companies and institutions. IBM are one of the largest suppliers of solutions containing servers and large software systems supporting the activities of financial institutions. The continuous cooperation with partners require demonstration and training facilities to hold product demonstrations, press conferences, education and training sessions. IBM built up several training rooms in this part of the UK, to be able to promote IBM services to the local industrial and financial sectors.

One of the training centers has been equipped with DEXON Systems’ AV product. This video wall controller provides soft edge blending service that is needed to control 3 projectors providing a coherent large area where IBM could display information for training purposes. Such a training room can usually accommodate 20-30 partners, and one speaker leads the training while displaying vital information about the offer to the audience.

Soft Edge Blending from a Video Wall Controller?

DEXON Systems are developer and manufacturer of DXN5500 projector wall controllers with soft edge blending capability. The Windows platform based systems provide complete solution for all multi-screen graphics and real time video input visualization requirements of demanding show room or staging applications.

The DXN5500 controller family applies advanced Express Crossbar technology for the full digital display of digital and analogue input information. DEXON’s DXWall controllers offer coherent, multi-screen graphics surface combined with universal input source overlay windows.

The controllers handle and display DVI, HDMI, RGB, YPbPr, HD-SDI, 3GSDI, DisplayPort, S-video or Composite video inputs in real time. Advanced wall management and easy-to-use remote-control tools handle overlay windows that can be opened, moved and zoomed over the multi-screen wall area freely.

But What is Soft Edge Blending for?

The beam projectors are perfect devices to display video information over large areas with high brightness that is used for larger audience. Everybody must be able to see characters and video data form any distance. If you want to display even more data you have to use multiple beam projectors.

The problem comes when you form a coherent area of the 3 projectors because the brightness is not uniform and so unacceptable picture you see when the projector images overlap each other. The soft edge blending technology was developed to solve the non-linear brightness problem over the overlapping areas of the beam projectors.

DEXON’s soft edge blending technology allows you to set an overlapping area of the neighboring beam projectors images and define a non-linear brightness characteristics over this overlapping. The result is a nice and coherent large area of several beam projector images.

How Can I Set up Soft Edge Blending?

The arrangement of the beam projectors can be easily set up in the DXWallConfig utility with no limits. The beam projectors can form the image in horizontal, vertical or even in matrix position. After defining the arrangement customer can set up the size of overlapping screen between neighboring projector areas vertically and horizontally also.

Advanced test pictures support precise setting of overlapping areas. Easy definition of grey scale transitions on the overlapping areas along with professional user interface makes it possible to set the grey scale gradients over the overlapping areas one-by-one.

The spline curves definition can be performed by simple mouse operations. The core competence of this installation is DEXON's soft edge blending capability, this service has been equipped with an advanced, spline-based setup possibility in order to perform pixel precise alignment of beam projector image. The beam projectors project picture with large overlapping area where the grey scale modification is possible to be able to see a coherent, clear picture with uniform brightness. This project has been working for the past 10 years, serving extensive training for the industrial area.

The ultimate solution

Yes, the integration of a multi-screen video wall controller and soft edge blending service is at your fingertips now. The job and solution contain the following elements

  • Video wall control in a single chassis, driving multiple output devices, in our case 3 pieces of high brightness beam projectors
  • Forming a large and coherent surface out of these 3 projectors as one area without borders
  • Display of Windows operating system graphics desktop over this area forming one screen
  • Rendering standard Microsoft Windows applications’ graphics output over this large screen and so demonstrate IBM applications’ operations
  • Input connections and sources from media players, computers
  • Display video information from these input sources over the video wall area in any position and in any size but in real time for the perfect customer experience

DXN5500 Architecture

DEXON Systems provide the perfect solution for all these services integrated into a 4U high chassis and so supporting the successful training of the financial professionals. Yes, this is perfect investment to solve such a complex job with the highest available technologies integrated into a single box.
