DEXON Technology in the Heart of Seoul

DEXON Technology in the Heart of Seoul

This case study reflects on a successful installation in a densely populated city with busy traffic and intersections of multiple metro lines where a reliable DEXON device eases daily operation.

The Seoul Metropolitan Subway is a metropolitan railway system consisting of 23 rapid transit, light metro and commuter rail located in northwest South Korea. Seoul Metro is Seoul’s public subway corporation, operating subway lines 1 to 4 in the highly dense metropolitan area of Seoul. An average nearly 4 million people use these lines each day.

In particular, Seoul is home of 7 out of 10 busiest metro lines in the world. Annual ridership is 1885 million which allows Seoul to jump to place 5 worldwide. Today, the network is one of the largest and most efficient urban railway systems in the world, with 331.5 km of track on lines 1–9 alone Line 2 is the most heavily used line which consists of 60.2 km.

This figure is equivalent to an average of 3,000 trips for each one of Seoul’s 10 million citizens. This particular line is also known as the circle line which was constructed in 1978-84. Headways on the line vary from 2 minutes 18 seconds on peak periods and 5–6 minutes off-peak periods. The line connects the city center to Gangnam, Teheran Valley and the COEX/KWTC complex.

In December 2010 the line is recorded as having the highest WiFi data consumption in the Seoul Metropolitan area. It averaged 2.56 times more than the other 14 subway lines fitted with WiFi service zones.

Command Control Application

To provide safe, reliable, convenient and cost-effective transit service, Seoul Metro had decided to build a new Command Control System to manage this metro line with a modern technology. Particular requirement of the project was to find a solution that provides the displays in the trains, the computer platform and the complete video surveillance system. In this case, the core of the system was a video wall, which had to serve as a display to several live video inputs in high-quality, scalable video windows combined with other graphic applications over the desktop simultaneously.

Control of line service needed continuous interaction of operators and service personnel while supervision of the trains and passenger traffic was an essential factor. Operators daily work was supported by a full graphics service collecting and displaying all the information in order to acquire total control of traffic service of the busy capital of South Korea.

SEOUL METRO Configuration

"I am highly satisfied with DEXON’s video wall controller solution that integrated high definition hardware and software systems. It was very easy to install and easy to set up. The system has a user-friendly control surface, so it didn’t take much time for the operators to learn how to use it. Additionally the controllers are very reliable and they provide high-quality service during the 24/7 operation."

Representative of the System Integration corporation, Alex K.

The purpose was to find the ideal control solution for the video wall system, since system performance mainly depends on the controller. DEXON Systems offered a reliable solution that met the customer's requirements. As DEXON has professional experience with multi-screen video display projects for 30 years, today we are a well-known developer and manufacturer of advanced video wall controllers on the market. DEXON’s controllers provide high-quality video displaying (Crystal Video) with fast switching capability.

All the controllers and parts are manufactured for 24/7 operation. The integrator used 2 pieces of DEXON’s video wall controllers for this project in order fulfill the purpose by using 14 pieces of 70” LCOS cubes. The large wall of rear projected cubes displays all the required graphics and video information that must be processed and controlled by the number of remote operators. DEXON controller’s solution for managing data and video display was integrated successfully with the MMI software. The project met the extremely high safety requirements and gave an additional reassurance provided by the video surveillance system.
